John C. Ziegler, D.Min, MA, BA

Executive Director, ASNA

Dr. Ziegler has served as Executive Director of the Alabama State Nurses Association (ASNA) 2012 – present.  ASNA is the original professional nursing organization in the state.  It was instrumental in the passage of the first Alabama nurse practice act in 1915.  ASNA represents the interests of all nursing specialties and is an affiliate of the American Nurses Association.  In his role of Executive Director, Dr. Ziegler works with the ASNA Board, staff and numerous volunteers to provide opportunities for members to grow personally and to collectively promote excellence in the nursing profession.  He also works with the Alabama Coalition of Nursing Organizations to help facilitate Nurses Day at the Capitol, the annual clinical/policy event held annually in Montgomery.

During his tenure as Executive Director, ASNA has grown by more than 20%, upgraded member benefits, and enhanced the ASNA brand with a total upgrade of their website, social media and the Alabama Nurse publication.  Other popular additions to ASNA offerings include the introduction of the first ever Alabama Nurse specialty auto license plate and Visa Nurse Platinum credit card.  Revenue from the license plates has provided thousands of dollars for Community Grants and Nurse Scholarships.  Due to the popularity of the Nurse Tags, The Alabama Nurses Foundation is expected to continue to grow and become a large source of funding for scholarships.  With respect to legislation and policy issues, Dr. Ziegler is a registered lobbyist with a singular focus on serving the interests Alabama’s 93,000 nurses and the nursing profession.

He is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a Master of Arts from Illinois State University and a Doctor of Ministry from Reformed Theological Seminary.  Before coming to ASNA, he served as Public Information Officer for the Alabama Department of Mental Health.  Earlier in his career, he served on a Lieutenant Governor’s staff and as Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor.
