With 17 years of experience in the private sector of healthcare, nursing education, and currently the Veterans Health Administration through the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center (BVAMC) and Huntsville VA Outpatient Clinic, Dr. Wilkinson has intimate knowledge of the challenges the nursing profession faces, regardless of the practice setting. She has served as an advocate for the nursing profession in the workplace and in public through advocacy for professionalism and scope of practice.
I knew when graduating college the first time with a BA that I had not answered my calling, so I went back to school for a second degree, my BSN. I wanted to give back to people the same kind of care and compassion that I had received as a girl in the aftermath of a life-changing event and a very long hospitalization.
Dr. Wilkinson obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University in 1994. In 2001, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Auburn University at Montgomery. She continued her education at the University of South Alabama where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing in 2013 and received the College of Nursing’s Award for Excellence in Practice. She began the pursuit of a doctorate and ultimately completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) at the University of South Alabama in 2017.
ASNA is the hub of nursing activity in Alabama. I wanted to be “in the know” with what's happening in the profession and with what's potentially impacting my nursing career, so I joined. By being an ASNA member, I am choosing to be informed and have a voice in decision-making that directs what I can and can't do in my practice.
From 2014-2016, she served as District 1 President and was actively engaged in ASNA at the district and state levels to promote excellence in nursing and in the American Nurses Association (ANA). In 2016, she was elected to the office of President-Elect in which she has served with professionalism and vision for the future.
She has recently completed the BVAMC’s prestigious Action Based Leadership (ABL) program while also remaining involved with ASNA District 1. She served as the Chairperson for the committee which planned District 1’s CE event in August.
Dr. Wilkinson has a 16-year-old son, James. She enjoys attending his soccer games, gardening, cooking, and riding her horses. Together they love their Miniature Schnauzers, Liesel and Zeppelin, and kitties Sam, Boots, and Emily.
