Congratulations to our District 2 Citations of Excellence Award Winners! We couldn't do the great work we do without you!

Norma Cuellar, PhD, RN, FAAN
The University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing
Dr. Cuellar is a distinguished member of the nursing community at The University of Alabama's Capstone College of Nursing. She chairs The CCN Committee on Inclusiveness, which strives to make the college a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, faculty, and staff. Dr. Cuellar is a nationally recognized speaker, scholar, and nurse professional largely due to her work with NAHN, her program of research with the Bama-L Project, and her dedication to the promotion of cultural diversity and inclusion.
Mary Ann Kelly, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN
The University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing
Dr. Mary Ann Kelley is very enthusiastic and passionate about her nursing career. Dr. Kelley has been an active member of the ASNA for many years. She has served in multiple roles and positions at the District 2 level. Her Doctorate is in nursing education from UAB. She has received 4 research grants to study rural African American women and educational intervention for breast health. She has completed community service related to breast health education in collaboration with healthcare agencies in the community for 25 years. In addition, Dr. Kelley has been a nursing educator for 30 years.
Betty Key, EdD, MSN, RN, CCRN
The University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing
Dr. Key has been an active member of the ASNA for many years. She currently serves as member of COPI committee. Her Doctorate is in education from The University of Alabama as well as a Master of Science Degree in Rural Case Management. Dr. Key began her nursing career in 1985 as an LPN before continuing her education. She has worked 28 years as a bedside nurse in various roles in Critical Care and years later, joined the Capstone College of Nursing. Dr. Key is the recipient of the 2015-16 Epsilon Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Recently, Dr. Key was awarded funding to implement a feasibility study on use of physical trackers in African American church. She has presented her research locally, nationally, and internationally, and internationally and continues to work in ICU PRN.
Abby Horton, MSN, RN
The University of Alabama, Capstone College of Nursing
Mrs. Horton’s has been an active member of the ASNA for many years, serving roles on both state and District level. In addition, Mrs. Horton is a graduate of the ASNA Leadership Academy. She has served as Chair of the Convention Planning Committee and presently, the Vice President of District 2. She continues her nursing education as a student in the Doctorial Program at UA. We are delighted to have her as a member of District 2 and recognize her years of service in education and to the community.
Essie Parker, MSN, NP
Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center
Ms. Parker performs detail history and physical examinations, participates in the admission screening process, provides medical clearance for admission, orders appropriate laboratory and ancillary service consults, prescribes and manages medications as well as evaluates the outcomes of therapies ordered. Ms. Parker provides back up coverage for other Nurse Practitioners that are on vacation or sick leave. Ms. Parker has continued to work to identify cost saving measures, decrease polypharmacy and abuse of medications. She provides medication education to the veterans and their families and works with the MHRRTP staff to ensure compliance with medication policies and procedures. She continues to update her education via literature review, in-service education and participation in a variety of professional education offerings to ensure that the care she provides is consistent with research recommendations. She has been serving our nation's veteran population for more than 30 years. Ms. Parker is an active member of District 2
